Yegge argues Google built powerful internal systems but didn’t expose them cleanly to external developers, unlike Amazon, which forced all teams to use public APIs. “Gatestown” represents a chaotic, insider-only ecosystem—great for those inside, hostile to outsiders. His core lesson: platforms win when APIs come first, even internally.
